Moll Frothingham describes Leo as being a dualistic archetype that moves between "the onstage Leo," who radiates and displays light, and "the offstage Leo," who retreats and can be very individualistic and territorial. Frothingham talks about the progression through the four elements of fire, earth, air and water, which represent the four aspects of being. She also compares and contrasts the three fire signs of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, and how these are understood according to their different qualities of Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable.
